It is the responsibility of the patient to ensure that all contact information is correct and up to date for them and their families, for purposes of urgent contact and referrals appointments.

Appointments Procedure

Routine Appointments

If attending for a routine appointment please contact the surgery well in advance to ensure the day, time and Doctor that you wish to see. As we are a very busy surgery we cannot guarantee same day appointments.

Urgent & Emergency Appointments

As we are a very busy surgery we do try to accommodate patients for urgent and emergency appointments on the same day. However, as a last minute appointment you may not be given a choice of which Doctor you see.
If you want a specific Doctor please arrange appointment well in advance.

Home Visits

We do not provide home visits.


Repeat Prescriptions

All prescription requests must be given at least 24 hours notice and know the list and dosage of medications that is required . It can be requested by telephone or call in to reception. There will also be a fee for the prescription if not seen by the Doctor.

All patients must be seen and reviewed every six months for a repeat of long term medications. It is a legal requirement.

Sick Certs & Social Welfare Certs

Private Cert

A Doctors’ consultation is required prior to certification. The pt cert will be covered in the consultation fee and it will be €10.00 for every cert after that. You might be asked to come in for review periodically if out of work long term. You can also receive a private cert if you have attended a consultant or hospital or Shannondoc but you will have to present proof of visit.

Social Welfare Cert

You must be out of work at least six days before you are entitled to a social welfare certificate. You must have attended the surgery, consultant or hospital for a medical reason to receive a cert. They are received on a weekly basis unless stated otherwise the social welfare office. You can order a repeat social welfare cert by telephone or call in to reception on the day before it due and collect it the following day. You must know your date, medical complaint and PPS number when ordering your cert. You will not receive your cert unless you this information. There is no fee for a social welfare cert.

Test Results

It is the patient’s responsibility to telephone the surgery one week later to receive their test results. On occasion you may be asked to attend for a Doctors consultation to discuss results in more detail if required.

If tests are ordered and performed at a hospital, the results will go back to whichever Doctor or Consultant at the hospital that ordered the test. They will then write a letter to the GP to inform them of the results. This may take a number of weeks.

It is up to the patient to make sure all contact details for patient and family (if also patients) i.e telephone and address are up to date in case we need to in get contact with you urgently.

No Interruption / Call Back Policy

We have a strict no interruption policy during Doctor/Nurse consultations. If you need to speak to the Doctor/Nurse urgently about something either make an appointment or leave a detailed message with the receptionist and the Doctor/Nurse will try to phone you back as soon as possible. As the surgery is very busy we cannot guarantee same day call back from the Doctor/Nurse but we do try our best.

Medical Card Holders

It is up to the medical card holder to ensure that their medical card is in date, with the correct Doctor and all other details are correct. If they are not you will be charged a fee as the GP will not get reimburse for your consultation and treatment.

The Medical Card entitles the holder to a range of free services, however some are not covered on the Medial

Over 70's & Under 6's GP Healthcare

Under 6’s

We are signed up for the under 6’s free health care scheme. It entitles your child to free health by your GP until they are 6 years old. It is the parents’ responsibility to have your child registered for this scheme otherwise there will be a fee for their healthcare. Make sure you register straight away as it takes a little while to authorise it for the child to be covered for free care.

Over 70’s

We also provide free GP Visits for over 70’s. This however does not provide free medication. It is the responsibility of the patient to ensure that they have registered for this and also that the card is up to date. If it has expired there will be a fee.
